Once again, I found myself surfing Gucci's website and decided to look at their Spring-Summer campaigns which features very young models frolicking with other models amongst rain forest greenery and enormous flowers; just as gorgeous as they are donning Gucci's latest.
Their was an image of a skinny male model with perfect pouty lips and shaggy blonde hair with interesting facial features- posing on a rock effortlessly wearing brown trousers with a red strip going down the side, paired with Cognac hued tasseled loafers and a grey rain forest printed tee.
To wear jeans is to be comfortable- that is a misconception many have. So they wear jeans and a tee or worse, dreadful track pants. We have an option to keep us both comfortable and chic at the same time- that is how you should feel when you are getting dressed. Whether it is for everyday or a special occasion. Jeans aren't your only option.
Joe Jonas was photographed stylishly lunching with girlfriend Camilla Belle at LA's Cafe du Village. Joe Jonas is young and has so much style- he has more style than most adults. I do not know of many that would wear a blazer to dinner nevertheless a lunch date with their girlfriend. Joe paired his shrunken blazer over a tank. Which is something a 17 year-old rock star can attempt and make it look cool. I would appear as if I trying way too hard if I wore a tank under a shrunken Dior blazer.
I need some clarification. Can I even call a tank, a tank? It's probably not cool referring to it as a tank. I just despise the word Guinea Tee, and Wife Beater is just as bad, if not worse. A few months ago, I learned what a Guinea Tee is. Apparently, I must live in a bubble- the PYT that informed me looked at me as if I was Marvin the Martian. I don't care what she says I still do not like the word.
Richard Chai men's wear goes on sale at Gilt.com. Sale starts at 12 Noon EST. Purchase fast or you'll miss out! If you are not a memeber- Gilt Group has made a special link for the readers of What He Wears.
I was very impressed with the men at last nights Oscar Awards. Of course there were those whom never disappoint when they are on the red carpet, for example, Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig. Young Hollywood did not disappoint either- I thought Zac Efron looked amazingly handsome. There was something sexy about the fit of his Dolce and Gabbana tuxedo. He was one of my favorites of the evening. I'm actually shocked that I am saying that myself! Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel also looked great. I've been watching his red carpet appearances and he is generally consistent. Dominic Cooper whom I have blogged about in the past- was dashingly handsome as well with his perfect little bow tie. I thought Robert Pattinson cleaned up rather well; although the hem of his trousers could have been shorten a bit; I am such a stickler for the "perfect break!" He still looked great.
In my opinion, Mickey Rourke owned the red carpet. Lets wait to hear what they say on E! tonight. Although his look was a bit more Rock and Roll- I thought it was still Oscar worthy. Josh Brolin and Pineapple Express star James Franco fell flat- nothing special or memorable about their appearance. I was disappointed with James Franco everyone raves about him and he hits the red carpet and is a complete bore. Isn't he the new James Dean or something? Moving along, I am still on the fence with John Legend's brown suit. Did it fit him well? Absolutely! Did he look great in it? Absolutely! Did I like it for the Oscars? I'm still not sure. For me, it was very Easter Sunday. Sound crazy?
I am uncertain what Joey Fatone was thinking wearing baggy suit trousers and trainers to the Oscars. It is the freaking Oscars for Pete's Sake! Not the Grammy's... Dress up! I know Peter Perfect is going to give him fever on E! Emile Hirche who is so handsome fell so flat. If I see those chunky soled lace-ups again I will probably loose my mind.
I received an email from eLuxury promoting their sale. Whilst browsing the sale I found these cool looking red suspenders by Acne. They are adjustable and elasticized with a smooth grained leather patch in the back with embossed logo and suede lining.
One of the hottest parties of the New York Fashion Week schedule was the Armani Store opening on 5th Avenue. I couldn't wait to see what everyone was wearing; unfortunately I had to wait until images hit the net. I was disappointed with some of the men's ensembles. American indie rock band, Vampire Weekend, dressed better than most men at the fete. I was not a fan of lead vocalist Ezra Koenig's sneakers; lace-up leather boots (not Doc Martens) would have created a cleaner look. Over all, the band looks great. Keyboard and guitarist Rostam Batmangli wins best dressed. I like the fit of his blazer; the jackets lines are even with his shoulders. Even unbuttoned you can see it is a great fit.
GQ is featuring has collected the most stylish musicians, actors, and film stars in America whom who could learn a thing or two about style. Musicians like Justin Timberlake wearing William Rast- natch and Kanye West have made the list. Also on the prestigious list was DJ Mark Ronson- who was styled in a Versace Collection suit and tie for his GQ shoot. Dashingly handsome hotelier Andre Balaz and owner of the legendary Chateau Marmot; looks great in a tailored heather grey suit by Louis Vuitton.
GQ has provided additional photos from JT's shoot, which are really cool. He wears some William Rast but also pieces from designers like Burberry Prorsum, Dior and Jil Sander. In look three Justin wears a white blazer with white satin piping from William Rast and it's impressive I must say- tres chic! Not too shabby for a celebrity endorsed brand.
Earlier this month I gave you a sneak peak of Carolyn Massey's collection for Topman. I posted an image of a black scarf coat that would soon be released. The scarf coat is now available on Topman.com for a very reasonable price. Keep in mind their sizes run smaller that you are used to. If you prefer a roomier fit Topman suggests purchasing one size up. Additionally, you do not want the coat to fit you like a coat on a hanger; so do not purchase it too big. Remember a boxy fit is never the right fit.
Yigal Azrouel's Fall 09 Men's Wear Presentation at his Meatpacking boutique was a unique fusion of art and fashion with art direction by Dror. The show consisted of a live performance by handsome male models assembling thirty-two of Dror's interlocking square pieces. Dror Benshetrit's intention was to show construction and deconstruction by incorporating his "Squared Square" wall design during the show; he wanted to highlight Yigal's attention to detail and layers. The squares were shown in both flat and constructed states to exhibit the painting done by artist Dov Talpaz.
The installation was the perfect amalgamation of art and fashion without over-shadowing the clothes. Dror's intention of displaying the construction and deconstruction did in fact highlight Yigal's aesthetic. His clothes embody an aesthetic of perfect imperfection, which keeps others and I purchasing pieces season after season; for example, taking an elongated chunky knit cardigan and stitching it in a reverse pull or washing leathers.
This relaxed-chic collection of washed leathers and asymmetrical knits are what Yigal does best and is reworked every season where it is still sort of new. The Fair Isle body scarf was one my favorite pieces; which will definitely get an editorial buzz. The wool argyle asymmetrical top caught my attention as well. Get your hands on these pieces when they hit his Meatpacking boutique- with the rave reviews Yigal has received for his Fall 09 collections I'm sure they will sell out fast.
I have a friend who is a shop-a-holic, worse than I; and that's bad! She called to inform me of the Dunhill men's sample sale. All sportswear, furnishings and accessories- including watches, cufflinks and pens. Like most sample sales- all sales are final, no exchanges or returns. Credit Cards Only.
The above image is from Dunhill's Spring/Summer Ad Campaign Staring Jude Law.
Men.Style.com released a list of the top men's buyers' favorite pieces. The Pierre Hardy Chukka Boot that I fell in love with is now available at Barneys. I purchased this boot in beige suede with red grosgrain ribbon trim from Barneys a few months ago. I wore them to Yigal Azrouel men's presentation yesterday- they are very comfortable and light too. It's the perfect shoe to wear if you are running about from to show to show during the fashion week madness. These patent leather desert boots will look great with a crisp white collared shirt and a pair of black raw denim jeans or even a pair of black or navy trousers. It is the perfect black-tie inspired casual shoe.
I have been a fan of Tim Hamilton for quite some time. I remember a great navy cashmere cardigan I used for a photo shoot; I have since been a fan. Yesterday evening I had the opportunity to attend his Fall 09 men's wear presentation. Hamilton's inspiration came from the spirit of Wiener Werkstatte of early-20th century Vienna, he fixed his Fall/Winter 09 collection on the blurred line between abstract design and fine craftsmanship. This collection mixes innovative ornamental details and geometric elements. "I wanted to take aim at concepts of structure and conformity as requirements for modern design," stated Tim Hamilton.
His collection had the perfect amount of color using vivid reds for a handsome and perfectly tailored double-breasted silk-cashmere suit and a single-breasted suit. One of my favorite looks was a shearling rivington coat over a black/cream checked shirt, paired with one of Hamilton's signature cardigans and a semi-sheer drop crotch lounge pant that was shown both long and short throughout his collection.
James Long known for taking industrial fabrics and making them into pieces of art, his bags are designed with a masculine aesthetic. He teams soft leather with chambray suede, which contrasts with heavy-duty merchant handles finished with overstitched hardwearing leather. James Long is participating in Topman's LENS collective along with veterans Carolyn Massey, Dexter Wong, and Mjolk. The collective pieces hit Topman stores today and will be available for purchase early tomorrow morning.
SPURR's Fall 2009 collection was inspired by Stanley Kubricks film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Do not expect to see shiny silver suits with tall white boots- that would be a bit too literal. Instead he chose a palette of black, grey and white with vivid pops of color, which Simon Spurr is known for. In the collection was a 2-button peak lapel jacket in raspberry wool and a raspberry motorcycle jacket both immediately caught my attention. SPURR's suiting will have many running to Bergdorf's and Barney's. Especially if you are in search for a handsome 6-buttoned double breasted peak label jacket in grey flannel and black 2- buttoned peak lapel jackets in coated cotton- great for evening. This was a great collection with noticeably less denim but really how many pair of jeans do we need?
Nothing irks me more than a boxy suit. I take that back, their are sweat pants, UGGs and the guy on the train that sneezes obnoxiously loud into his hand and proceeds to hold the pole-ugh. When a suit is ill-fitting it adds pounds to your frame and hides what you should show-off. I never understood why some men purposely purchase suits in larger sizes- if they only saw through my eyes! That was the case with Senad Pali, a Life-Insurance Agent who was ambushed on the streets of New York by GQ magazine. GQ ambushed seven New York businessmen on the streets to save their souls from the sartorial demon known as the ill-fitting suit, whilst staying within their budget. They additionally offer seven tips to keep you from selling your soul to the boxy suit like- "Streamline Your suit," "Dress Your Age," and "Mix the Right Patterns."
Academy Award winning actor Paul Newman was known for his many hats film director, humanitarian, and entrepreneur and racecar enthusiast. Additionally, he was known for his effortless timeless style. The editors at GQ have recreated some of his iconic effortless looks. Modeling as Paul Newman is The Covenant actor, Sebastian Stan. In "A Simple Plan," which is my favorite looks, Sebastian Stan models a jacket, suit and shirt all by Louis Vuitton.
Suzy Menkes of the International Hearld Tribune attended Rick Owens first men's wear runway collection in Paris. She interviewed the "Goth" designer and discussed the runway show's soundtrack, Salome, an opera by Richard Strauss, the collections focal point, "focusing on silhouette, geometric forms and sharp shoulders, pockets jetting out..." and his views on beauty. Click on the title to watch the interview.
In the United States the name Carolyn Massey may sound foreign, but on the other side of the pond, Carolyn Massey is a pretty big deal. The 27-year-old London based British men's wear designer is currently in her fifth season and exhibits seasonally in Paris during Men's Fashion Week. Massey's pieces are sold internationally in Stockholm, London, Rome and Korea. Her third seasonal diffusion line for Topman goes on sale the 16th of February. The pieces will be sold at Topman locations and Topman.com. I expect the line to do really well as it has in previous collections. My favorite pieces are the double-breasted belted military jacket, high-waist pleated trouser, the black jacket with attached scarf and I cannot forget to mention the beige shorts. Courtesy of Topman, here is a sneak peek of what will be in stores later this month.
I received a postcard from Burberry notifying me that the new Prorsum Collection has arrived in stores. By the feel of the invite, it seems as if they used recyclable materials. You go Burberry! Sending invites to makes us spend money and going Green- it's like killing two birds with one stone. I scanned the invite for you to see. If bloggers had a clothing allowance the stone-trimmed cardigan (above) would be on my list. Although it is not a piece I would wear on a daily basis; it is a cool piece to wear when I wanted to look extra special.
Barney's New York Warehouse Sale is arriving shortly; 50-75% off full-priced ticket items. You can really find great pieces at this sale. I'd suggest going as soon the doors open for the best items. For those who have never been tot his sale-it is not a game! You might lose a limp over those Lanvin metallic lace-ups.
