Hunting for Collar Stays

Collar Stays by Barneys New York

A few years ago, a friend of mine gave me stainless steel collar stays as a graduation gift. They are the perfect set of six in various sizes. They came in black lizard embossed box with velvet lining- so perfect. Every man should have something similar to keep his stays in. I thought this would be a great stocking stuffer gift for my bf, but who the hell would have thought it would be such a pain the ass to find something like it.

Barneys was my first destination, naturally, but before I left the house I gave the men's accessories department a ring and the sad sales girl told me they had them in. I hauled ass to Barneys and when I arrived- everyone on the sales floor (because I asked everyone) said they sold-out. Can you imagine the state of fury I was in? I was forced to go to the legendary Bloomies on 59th Street and the only thing they had to offer was a set of eight in a tacky clear plastic box, which reminds me of the same clear plastic box you get your pot in. I purchased it out of desperation.

The next day I went to Nordstrom where I was offered slightly different options by David Donahue and Würkin. Although, the David Donahue collar stays did come in an actual box- I just did not appreciate his name splattered on every collar stay and I was just over the Würkin's magnet stay shtick. What ever happened to our simple and plain collar stays?

I have returned the collar stays from Bloomindales. Sorry Bloomies, but you should not have discontinued that perfect leather box set. Some say I'm just a pain in the ass, but I think I know what I want. Nothing wrong with that! I will have to wait until Barneys receive a new shipment. Hopefully, their sales people will it have together by then...

Don't Sweat Sweats

I have never been a fan of trends- especially, when the trend of the season happens to be sweat pants. Sweat pants have been featured on many Spring 2010 runways- designers like Yigal Azrouel, Genarra, Chronicles of Never, and Band of Outsiders have all presented sweat pants as the next "IT" thing everyone should have. Oak, one of New York hippest boutiques, is selling cashmere sweats- go figure! Wearing sweatpants outside of the gym is just so odd to me. Wearing them elsewhere is like wearing a Speedo while shopping for organic strawberries at Whole Foods. No gym no sweats, no pool, no Speedo. Sweat pant aficionados say, "I just want to be comfortable," but the being "comfortable" excuse only translates to laziness- especially after 10 am. Is a pair of Levi's and desert boots that uncomfortable? Probably not! So, if you decide to buy into the sweat pants trend, whether they are the old-school tight-at-the-ankles style, a la Champion Sportswear, or are made of cashmere- just keep in mind sweat pants are still sweat pants no matter the price point or designer label. Ladies you aren't excuse either!

Nail My Finger Giles

Last week was the Giles and Brother sample sale and I went determined to find the Railroad Spike Ring I used on Henley and I- it was the only thing I really wanted. It was the only one there, so, I guess it was meant to be. I picked up the ring along with an Anchors Away pin.

Store Profile: The Webster

South Beach is known for everything flashy and posh. There are gorgeous hotels, like the Fontainebleau, posh-white clubs like Nikki Beach, and Chanel did present a cruise collection in Miami, so, if it's good enough for Chanel its good enough pour moi. High fashion is just not reflected through the plethora of tight Ed Hardy tee's you see guys wearing. When I visited Miami two years ago I knew there had to be more to Miami fashion than blinged-out tees, cargo shorts and Havaiana's, and last week I was on a mission to find it.

The Webster is an exclusive three-level space devoted to fashion, jewelry and photography. Perfect for Miami Beach tastemakers, jet setters and fashion fiends, like myself, needing their next luxury fix. The founders Laure Hériard Dubreuil, Frederic Dechnik and Milan Vukmirovic, cofounder of renowned Paris boutique, Colette, carefully curate everything in The Webster. Famed architect Henry Hohauser built the Webster Hotel in the late 1930’s. The façade and lobby are classified historical landmarks and were restored to their original 1930’s design. Originally built as a four-story hotel, one of the four levels was removed and the ceilings adjusted to give a new dimension with a classic Art Deco 40’s vibe. The Webster, features select pieces from BDDW, an American furniture company from New York known for their heirloom quality solid wood furniture. Beginning on the ground level and evolving throughout each floor, The Webster’s wall space showcases photographs of internationally recognized photographers and artists. These photos play an important part of The Webster’s esthetics and are also available for sale- collections include works by Antonio Caballero, Denis Darzacq, Nick Clements, Joel Meyerowitz and Jeanloup Sieff.

Upon entering The Webster, you pass the in-house acclaimed Parisian restaurant, Caviar Kaspia. The ground floor is also dedicated to luxury sportswear lines, high-tops for sneaker enthusiasts by Balenciaga and Lanvin, and prestigious swimwear brands like, Robinson Les Bains. On the second floor, was a relatively empty room with just a few long wooden tables. On them, was a display of handbag collaborations for BE LIVE Fundraising. Designers like Roger Vivier, Calvin Klein and Jason Wu recreated the Wayuu "susu" mochila, which are wool and goat hair bags made by the women of the Wayuu Community in of La Guajira in Colombia. On the third floor you will find some exclusive pieces made only for The Webster, which is a genius idea. Who wants to return to New York or anywhere else with a shirt one can easily purchase and Bergdorf Goodman or Selfridges? You may find everything from Tom Ford tortoise shell tanning goggles to a Prada studded collar button-down to Pierre Hardy cap-toe oxfords. Julia, a pretty sales associate from France, broke my heart when they had no smaller sizes in a Marc Jacobs shirt I was drooling over. She tells me, "Everything on the sales floor is the smallest size." Something tells me back stock does not exist.

The Webster is a must see whether you want to lunch on Caviar and Vodka or just want to pick up a little bit of luxury to remind you of Miami. For more information about BE LIVE visit www.belivecolombia.org.

Belted by The Webster

Before I left for Miami, I said to myself, "Ryan, you cannot leave Miami without visiting The Webster." I heard so many great things about The Webster; it was great to finally experience it. I took a walk to the second floor where I found Fashion Heaven: Marc, Prada, YSL, and, of course, Trussardi. My bf pointed towards this awesome zipper belt by Trussardi. I tired it on and once I knew it fit- it did not leave my sight and back to the Concrete Jungle we went.

Stay tuned for a store profile on The Webster coming soon!

Vacation Here I Come...

Two more days and I am off to South Beach for a mini vacation, which is long over do. I still have no clue what I am going to pack. I think my Jil Sander blazer from SS 09 should come with me- especially, since I have only worn it once. Although, South Beach can be a bit trashy they do have a lot of posh boutiques. I will be paying a visit to some boutiques in the area. Stay tuned...

Balenciaga's Asymmetric Warmth

For those who have never shopped on Browns- it's basically, a one-stop shop of all the luxuries you have ever wanted. I found this Asymmetric Wool Coat by Balenciaga over the weekend and I want it. I'll be dramatic and say it's the only thing I want to keep me warm this winter. Clearly, I am not the only one that feels this way because there are only three sizes available and none of them are mine. Story of my life!

Gucci's Little Pony

Back in August, I did a post on pony hair shoes entitled, "My Little Pony." I reckon, pony hair shoes are having a moment: Gucci, Comme Des Garcons, and Ann Demulemeester have all debuted furry shoes.

I have been a bit obsessed with a pair of Gucci leather and pony hair wingtip lace-ups. After waiting several anxious weeks for them to arrive- I FINALLY have them. They are quite comfy. These are by far one of my prettiest shoes I own. Gucci sure knows how to make a fine shoe.

Margiela Watch Necklace

Photography by Gigi Stoll for What He Wears

A few weeks ago, I went to Aloha Rag to pull for a shoot that I styled and will go live on What He Wears within the next few weeks. I saw this Watch Necklace by Margiela and had to make it apart of my story. The above image, is a still-life image I styled for the shoot, but decided to feature it as separate post. The necklace is available in both silver and gold.

The Local Firm's SPECTACLES

Back in August, I did a Designer Watch Profile on Swedish label: The Local Firm. On Tuesday, I was invited to preview the label's Spring 2010 Collection at their New York Showroom. Designer Axel Nyhage presented key pieces from the collection, which featured the softest tees ever, unlined blazers and denim. As I prepared to dash out of the showroom, running late as usual, he showed me an amazing pair frames. I tried them on and forgot how late I was- I instantly fell in lust. I assume I lusted so much he told me they were mine. The dark and bold thick grey frames inspired by 3D glasses and 80's electric beats bare no logos. Only on the inside of the arms do you see THE LOCAL FIRM and the style's name SHADOW.

Maison Margiela for Les Ateliers Ruby

Safety-helmets are kind of annoying and not attractive, which is why some people do not wear them. I'm not saying it's a justifiable reason because one should wear a helmet and not compromise life for beauty, which is the motto of luxury helmet manufacture Les Ateliers Ruby. Perhaps, skateboard kids and cyclist would be more inclined to wear a helmet if they were as cool as this limited edition Maison Martin Margiela helmet for Les Ateliers Ruby. With luxurious lambskin lining and distinctive drawings inspired by graffiti on the Maison actual window makes this retro inspired helmet kind of sick. Only 600 Pavilion style helmets were made worldwide.

If you are not familiar with Ruby helmets, they are manufactured by carbon fibers- a technology used in aerospace technology, which guarantees maximum strength and ultra-lightness.

Don't Tie Me Up

I cannot bring myself to wear a tie. It's a bit unfortunate, but I just do not like the way I look it one. I believe the last time I wore a tie was for my high school graduation, and I am pretty certain I did not fancy wearing one then. My psychological analysis suggests my tie avoidance steams from being forced to wear a
plaid tie when I attended Catholic School. I'm not saying I hate ties all together. They are just not for me. In fact, ties are one of the easiest ways for men to add color and print in their wardrobe. Brad Goreski, from The Rachel Zoe Project, is absolutely adorable in his bow ties. He makes me want one, but I just cannot bring myself to do so. Damn that school!

Here is some neckwear that tie enthusiasts should be crushing on this season.

Zara Celebrates Keith Haring

Zara Man is launching a collection of exclusive tees with pop art graphics by the late legendary artist and social activist Keith Haring. The collection consisting of four tees and two sweatshirts will go on sale this week at Zara locations in over 60 countries. The tees, which feature and highlight Keith Haring's fondness for bold lines and active figures, will be debuted in numerous Zara windows all over the world in cities like: New York, London, Paris, Madrid and Berlin, just to name a few. Keith Haring was an amazing artist whose work reflects major socio-political themes of the late 80's. One of Keith's legendary pieces is his infamous "CRACK IS WACK" mural located on 128th Street and 2nd Avenue, which was inspired by the crack epidemic's effect on New York City in 1986. It was created as a warning and was executed independently by Haring and still exists today. His work carries messages of vitality and unity. This is a celebration of Keith Haring's work and all he believed in.

UPDATE: All at retail for $29.90 and sweatshirts for $59.90.

Burberry's Carrot Leg Trousers for Fall

What happens when you combine a harem pant and a tailored trouser? You get this handsome carrot pant by Burberry Prorsum. If you are not a fan of pleated trousers these from Burberry Prorsum's Pre-Fall Collection can make one change their mind. When you say, "Pleated trousers,” you might think of the trousers you saw on the pleasantly plumped sales guy at Best Buy, but I assure you, the guy with the onion bagel breathe who sold you that fridge last fall, is not wearing these. These trousers are made by Doeskin wool, which is blend of virgin wool and nylon with a low napped finished on one side. Definitely not your average Dockers, eh? Truthfully, I am usually not a fan of pleated trousers, but this pair is by far the most handsome pleated trousers I've seen in a while.

Kiehl's for Man's Best-Friend

Today’s feature is Kiehl's for Canine; something different for What He Wears. Why? Because what he wears is just as important as what you wear. You should never subject your hair to TRESemme, for example, nevertheless your pup. Hair products we use on ourselves can potentially dry your pup’s coat and make it look like a Brillo pad. Thank goodness for Kiehl's Cuddly-Coat for Man's Best-Friend. It really does make Cooper’s coat super-soft and gives his coat a light Lavender scent, which makes me more inclined to have him sleep in my bed. Lavender scented coat or TRESemme scented? You decide.

This is Cooper's What He Wears debut!
