Matt Dallas channels Lennon

Kyle XY star Matt Dallas was at West Hollywood hotspot Foxtail to celebrate NYLON's new issue with their cover girl Paris Hilton. Matt Dallas is wore John Lennon inspired frames that have become increasingly popular.  You might've seen images of Mary-Kate doing her daily Starbucks run donning the infamous Lennon-esque frames. Matt pulls off the round Lennon frames. As for the rest of his look, he's wearing a few different colors but they work for him. His reddish-brown leather jacket is well fitted, as are the trousers. The key in pulling off the trouser and sneakers look, is in the break of the trousers as they hit the sneakers (see Trouser and Sneakers post.

You can't beat that! This is an item that you will have in your closet forever and with this hot mess of an economy its better to shop basics and spend less on trendy items. Tim Hamilton Look Book

Tim Hamilton has released images from his spring/summer 09 lookbook. Hamilton has always been a fan of mine. I'm in love with the fit of this suit; the shrunken jacket and slim-fit trousers are amazing. The lightweight tee underneath the shrunken jacket completes this cool downtown look. This is a great look for spring/summer, especially on those hot days where you just do not want to wear anything.  I am starting to make my wish list for spring summer and this look makes the cut. Hey, you have to plan ahead and start saving!

GO OUT AND VOTE

Today is Election day lets show the world that America is ready for change.  One of my older posts, mentions a quote from Interview's Fabion Barron that reads, "I can vote better than half of America," lets prove him wrong. Vote for change and look good whilst doing so, Zac Posen agrees.

Obama all the way!  Vote Obama for change in America!

Cam Gigandet is Cool, Relaxed and Chic

Cam Gigandet chose an interesting look for the Crepusculo premiere in Madrid. Wearing an asymmetrical stripped Henley from Yigal's fall/winter 08 collections, lace-less oxfords and loose fitting jeans. The asymmetrical stripped Henley was one of my favorite pieces at Yigal's February runway presentation, besides the hand-knit hooded Marino sweater that almost made me fall onto the runway. I think the Henley fits amazingly on the Twilight star. Although I am partial to a jean with a slimmer fit, I can appreciate the looseness; they look great on him. I think the lace-less oxfords are cool and the fit of his leather jacket is perfect.  A man in a baggy leather jacket is not a good look, ever. I would have liked to see him wear his leather jacket with pushed sleeves, but all in all I think he looks cool, relaxed and comfortable.

Washing Raw Denim

One of my clients informed me about an A.P.C promotion; they are taking off $50 a new pair of jeans when you drop off your old pair. This tidbit lead me to the A.P.C website; to browse for a new pair of jeans, considering I've worn my Dior Homme jeans to holes, literally, I can use a new pair. No? Whilst browsing their collection, I came across denim-washing recipes.  I thought it was a genius idea.  I get so many questions regarding how to properly wash raw denim.

In July a year had gone since I purchased my Dior Homme's and it was time to wash my favorite pair. I've read about a technique that recommends you wear your raw denim as you immerse yourself in lukewarm water for a half hour with light detergent. I know it sounds a bit mad but it worked well. When it was time to dry them, I let them sun dry on my body; thank god it was a hot July afternoon. Attempting that technique on a day like today would be sadistic. As the denim dried it started to take my bodies shape.

After reading APC's four denim-washing recipes, I noticed my technique wasn't so mad after all. With the exception of letting them dry on the body, it does sound a bit extreme. Click on the link below to read about A.P.C's infamous denim-washing techniques.

Furry Situation

Fur is amazing; J. Mendel and Fendi make the best furs.  I contemplated purchasing a Mink fur vest from Michael Kors; I loved it.  Although, men in furs can be seen has a major faux pas.  Some despise a man donning fur.  It doesn't bother me as long as the proportions are right.  PETA is going to grow to hate me, soon they'll have a little moniker for me like The Olsen's (aka Trollsons) and I love them even after their recent bad press. Moving along, when it comes to fur men must definitely be easy on color. Let's leave colored and white fur for Limberachi, who was always great in fur, in all his goud-glory. Purchasing fur during these rough economic times may sound mad, but if you have the means for a mink-lined cashmere hoodie or have an extra $9,240 to spend on Otter fur boots at Tom Ford (shown above), I'm not mad at ya.

So should men wear fur and are Tom Ford's limited edition range of fur boots and accessories out of the question? Are the fur boots a frivolous purchase? Absolutely!  But if you can afford ski-trip to St. Mortiz, Switzerland, maybe these are the boots for you. I wouldn't wear them but I think they're amazing.

Would Elvis Approve?

I was looking through Gilt Groupe's sample sale for Barker Black and came across a handsome pair of plain-toe lace-ups in Colbalt suede. It's a great fall shoe. Try them with a pair of skinnies, preferably blue raw denim, a white collared shirt and a herringbone vest. Since we have approached windy October days in New York, I'd recommmend wearing on a black leather jacket and a navy scarf. Great outfit for meeting friends for a Friday happy hour at the Mercer. Elvis would totally approve!

Joshua Jackson Knits It Right

Knit ties are one of those cool pieces that can go wrong very easy and before you know it, you look like the biggest tool.  Their is nothing worst than looking like you are trying too hard. Knit ties are great, although I wouldn't wear one, I can appreciate when someone wears one well. Joshua Jackson is a prime example of how to make a knit tie work. Not only he is wearing the knit tie well but the over all look is so well executed.  The fit of his suit is amazing and the Prada brogues are gorg.  Take note of the plaid shirt, not an obvious choice, most men have chosen a solid color. The plaid shirt and grey vest adds a little something extra to his simple black suit.  So well done Joshua!

Chace is a V Man

V Man has released images of their latest cover boy, Gossip Girl hunk Chace Crawford for their first ever winter issue, shot by Mario Testino.  I almost did not recognize him with his up-do.  The D&G tartan jacket is amazing! I love the satin shawl collar. The way the bow tie works with the tartan jacket is perfection. Whether you wear it with tuxedo trousers or jeans; I am sure you will be the best-dressed man in the room.

New York Falls Into A Chill

I had a meeting downtown this afternoon and it was a rather windy and brisk day in New York, loves it. Give me a brisk day over New York during the summer; it's the last place I want to be in July. New York in the fall is at its best, the foliage, cashmere, leather, suede, and fur (get over it PETA!) Fall gives you options. With a day like today, it's time to break out cashmere and wool. If you have not been on Gilt.com you must see this cashmere, wool, and down vest by Bamford and Sons, it's amazing!  The vest is filled with Goose Down and has leather trimmings on the pockets and collar. Oh the luxuries that fall bring. An added plus are the internal pockets for your cell phone and Ipod. Zenga manufactures the wool and cashmere of this handsome vest, so expect a made in Italy tag. FYI, they produce and distribute worldwide for the Tom Ford label, so you know you are getting good shit folks.

Lets Vote Better!

I read this snippet on Fashion Week Daily's Chic Report. Interview's Fabion Barren says he can vote better than, "Half of America."  Let's show him and the rest of the World that WE WANT A CHANGE!

Sorry to get political but I'm a bit exhausted from the awful decline in America's economy!  Let's make a change people. Go vote and do it in Dior, because that's what I'll be doing!

Sample Sales

Hey Guys,

I have been informed about a sample sale tomorrow at 17 Battery Place, 5th floor. What designers do you ask? Gianfranco Ferre, Roberto Cavalli, John Galliano, Malo, Costume National. My partner in crime attended the friends and family private sale this morning.  He says, "They have good shit." He also says the shoes were "amazing" and the furs were "sick."  If you witness someone fighting over a Costume National suit, it's probably me. Additionally, this is a great opportunity to begin Christmas shopping.

Another great way to shop for Christmas is by purchasing at Gilt Groupe.  Don't roll your eyes whilst reading about anything Christmas saying, "It's not even Halloween yet!" Before you know it you will be rushing to New Jersey malls for last minute shopping. You'll have a great time gagging at shoppers in Juicy Sweats and Ugg boots!

Be Cool and Warm in Knits

Whilst going through my bosses Marie Claire I discovered Guy Spy, a page compiled to show trends in menswear. According to Marie Claire, "It Boys" wear knits.  If you ask me, it's always been about knits. They can be worn all year round, except on those New York summer days that are so hot you feel as if someone has sold your soul to Hades. Knits are those special pieces in your closet that elevate your average jeans and tee. Take a look at Pharrell; his cardigan takes him from NYU freshman to member of the Augusta National Golf Club. In great shades, like red, totally up your style-ante (see Ashton.)

Great knits can be found anywhere; it doesn't have to be Loro Piana or Brunello Cucinelli, as lovely as owning one or a few might sound. Check out J. Crew they do an excellent job with knitwear especially cashmere, as they purchase theirs through Loro Piana, natch.

Leggo My Logo

In late May, I found the perfect bag that would fit my portfolio. My criterion for the perfect bag was: A. It had to fit my 11x14 portfolio, B. Not force me to hand the sales clerk my lung along with my Amex and C. Have no visible logos.

I was adamant on finding a bag with no visible logos.  Lets face it logos are so over!  It's all about subtle luxury, as luxury should be subtle. Luxury is something that shouldn't be flaunted, especially in today's economy. Flaunting wealth is tacky. Or should I say flaunting the ability to afford certain pieces tacky. I don't deem anything wrong with purchasing uber-expensive items especially if you have the means to do so, shit why not. Can we agree or do we beg to differ?

For this reason, I can appreciate brands like Bottega Veneta, who do the complete opposite of say, Gucci or Louis Vuitton.  They concentrate on quality which is more important than splattering their name throughout the bag. If you were not in the know you would be clueless as to whom the name behind the legendary woven bag. Don't get me wrong; I can appreciate certain bags with logos, like classic label Goyard.

So where did purchase my bag?  Yves Saint Laurent, who can do no wrong in my eyes.  It was a handsome chocolate-pebbled leather tote, which is the type of leather that ages gracefully. No logos, no hoopla just a bag made of great quality and leather.  Another plus was it was on sale!

Marc Jacobs Sale

Whilst shopping in SoHo yesterday I walked passed the Marc Jacobs boutique on Mercer Street.  I looked around; of course wanted to buy one of everything, how could you not? And stumbled upon two bins with 100% cashmere thermals for $50.  I almost lost my mind! You can't find cashmere sweaters for $50 at J. Crew.  It was the perfect sale to build your winter wardrobe. Get it before it's gone!

The Hunt for a Leather Jacket

I've been on the hunt for a leather jacket for quite some time now. How hard could it be you're thinking? Not impossible but a slight mission. What was I looking for? Not much, just a simple black leather jacket of good quality and a perfect fit. The fit of a leather jacket is very important. It should not be baggy or slouchy and should stop at the waist. Why would you want to appear bigger than you're actual size? Additionally, you shouldn't have to say, "Maybe I can alter it," it's not a blazer. Try the size you think you are and perhaps a size smaller.

I was avoiding making a designer purchase. Spending 1,200 plus dollars was not an option, especially in today's economy. Moving along, where does a guy go for cool, handsome leather jacket without bells and whistles? I hit the net and did some research and stumbled upon this handsome leather jacket at Club Monaco; which is one of the best American high-street retailers. It was perfect no studs, bells or whistles just a simple all black leather jacket. The price was even better only $599 (tax not included.)

Joe Jonas Styles on Melrose

Teenage girls and some boys are Burnin' Up for The Jonas Brothers. Although I'm not Burnin' Up for their music, they do have an amazing sense of style.  To style them; must be such a pleasure. I love the fact they aren't wearing tattered jeans and slogan tees. You know the obnoxious type that reads lovely quotes like, "Don't Touch My Nuts," with two silly cartoon-like squirrels underneath the quote. Ugh! Whilst shopping at the Christian Audigier store on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles, the eldest of the trio Joe Jonas opted for a trim grey suit with velvet Bordeaux detailing, red-stripped tee and red wing-tip. He looks amazing!  I love the pushed up sleeves look. The best part about this ensemble is he doesn't appear like he is trying too hard.

Manners Are Tres Chic

When discussing style people don't instinctively think about the little things, the sort of things that make a man a gentleman.  I am talking about manners.  It's always nice for a man to be well dressed but to be so with manners is a plus.  A few weeks ago a friend asked if I would able to write a letter of recommendation for him.  I said yes of course and mailed the letter.  Whilst shifting through this afternoon's mail, I shift pass a lovely gold envelope. I open the envelope, praying it wasn't a wedding invite, and see a hand-written thank you note.  He wrote a thank you note for the recommendation letter I had written.  Hand-written thank you notes are not only courteous but also chic.  It is a chic little habit everyone should adopt. They are also great to send after interviews. I had an issue with the Burberry store on 57th and 5th in New York, the alteration manager was amazing in rectifying the matter, and so I sent a hand-written note.  Everyone is so accustomed to sending and receiving thank you emails; to receive one is so refreshing, more personal. Being chic is not only about your appearance; the little things like manners count too.  Being chic is a lifestyle.

Finally!

Hey Guys,

I finally received my new hard drive! What a relief.  I felt like Carrie Bradshaw when my hard drive crashed, remember that episode when her Mac crashes and she did not "back-up".  I've not had Internet for over a week and thought I was going to lose my bloody mind.  Anyone who has been in this predicament can empathize.

When my Apple Genius told me my hard drive went to shit (my interpretation of course) he suggested I purchase my hard drive from a company called Driver Savers.  They have cheaper prices and better warranty policies. I purchased my hard drive for about $70 with a 3-year warranty and a rebate, what a freaking deal. If you have ever had to purchase a hard drive from Apple or those tools the Geek Squad, you know $70 is a steal.

Here's their info.

Sneakers and Trousers Work

When I told a friend that I was going to wear navy trousers and sneakers for Yigal Azrouel's menswear presentation this afternoon- he felt strangely ambiguous about the look.  I can't blame him- it has to be the right shoe.  I told him it is an amazing look if correctly executed. So how do you pull off the perfect sneaker-trouser look?

For starters, the fit and proportions of the trouser have to be perfect, that is the key rule to menswear- fit and proportion. Check out the fit of Ashton Kutcher's trousers.  The trousers are not baggy or too tight.  They should be fitted with a little room in the thigh region, for a relaxed silhouette. You should keep a close eye on the length of your trousers.  If they are too long the trouser will bunch against your sneaker and create a sloppy look. The trouser should hit the tongue of your sneaker; wear it like a Tod's driving moccasin. If you think of your sneaker like so, pulling this look off will be a walk in the park.  Have fun selecting a sneaker too. You can find so many great sneaks.  I'm opting for a pair of navy croc and cream perforated low-tops by Creative Recreation. Complete your look with a polo, Rugby shirt or button-down, throw on a vest or cardigan if you decide to layer. Don't forget to tuck!

Cuff Up

I've noticed a few celebrities wearing their jeans extremely cuffed; remember when
Ed Westwick was photographed at LAX?  Justin Timberlake attended Fashion Rocks with his jeans extremely cuffed; he paired them with a satin-trimmed grey blazer, a black shorten tie, black shirt and pocket square. This isn't a easy look to pull off without looking like you are trying too hard but this is a great look and he wears it well.

GQ Men Of The Year

Yesterday was the GQ's Men of the Year Awards held at London's Royal Opera House; hosted by Sir Elton John and Lily Allen.  Christopher Bailey won the award for Best Designer; an award that was much deserved.  Brandon Flowers of The Killers had the honor of becoming GQ's most stylish man. Where was Daniel Craig and Pharrell was?

My top three best dressed for the evening it would be:
  1. Brandon Flowers
  2. Will Young
  3. Dominic Cooper

Jude Law looks amazing in this double-breasted suit.

Kanye West, not his best look but still a good one.

Designer of the Year, Christopher Bailey

Mama Mia's Dominic Cooper

I know its menswear, but this is Naomi Campbell here!  She can do no wrong in my eyes even if she is hurling a Blackberry.  Flawless!

Orlando Bloom

Mark Ronson donning an amazing navy suit attended the ceremony with Daisy Lowe.

Will Young, wearing a handsome black satin-trimmed grey blazer.

Brandon Flowers looking stylish in a beautiful cream blazer with tasseled shoulder pads. He took a risk; perhaps why he won most stylish man.

Cash's American Style

A well-dressed individual at the airport is like a breath of fresh air.  I'm positive everyone can relate.  When I saw images of Cash Warren at LAX I was able to breath easy. How many times have you held your breath at the sight of Crocs and Hawaiian shorts? Countless I'm sure, especially if you live in the States. Cash's spiffy boat-shoes, slim-fit khakis, sleeveless navy sweater, plaid collard shirt and aviators, reek Americana.  His trousers are the perfect fit.  See, khakis don't have to look like your neighbor's boxy khaki trousers. This is a great look, simple, easy and comfortable enough to travel in.  What more can you ask for?

Are you a BLUETOOL?

Occasionally an invention is created that is genius in theory, but used obnoxiously. Remember Nextel; before Sprint purchased the company they had those walkie-talkie cell phones. It's a great idea until taken to a level of obnoxiousness.  No one needs to hear how last nights Mac & Cheese ran through you. I've actually heard that convo before.  Am I the only one that thinks hearing a whole convo one the bus or while shopping at Club Monaco is obnoxious and tacky? Thank goodness for iPods!

The next invention to take its place on the obnoxiousness meter is the Bluetooth. They are the most hideous things ever invented. There is nothing aesthetically pleasing about them. If one uses them whilst driving, which was there soul purpose, no problem.  If you do not drive or aren't driving at the moment why use it?  It's like using a spatula as a shoehorn.

In the know + tell section of Details September issue, they have a name for this type of individual; the Bluetooth abusers are called Bluetools.  It is a noun to describe "a person who wears a Bluetooth earpiece at any time other than driving." How appropriate!  I've always called them tool-jobs or tools but Bluetool is more fitting. How many times have you seen someone blue toothing whilst walking or wearing one on the bus?  Just this week on my way home from work someone was blue toothing on the bus. I had the sudden urge to smack it out of her ear.  I mean really, she was on the bus wearing a Bluetooth, why? Someone contact Merriam-Webster and request a bluetool entry!

"Off Track"

Don't you hate when you receive your magazine subscriptions after the news stands? I swear I was tempted to purchase GQ's damn September issue before I received it in the mail!  Everyday I would pass by a newsstand and say, "I hope that issue is in the bloody mail box!" I finally got it in the mail Saturday.  Late, I know, actually very late. Was I the only one? Anyway, while reading GQ's September issue I came cross Glenn O' Brien's monthly sartorial conundrums, it reads:

"A Croix de Gerre or Legion d' Honneur?  A top hot and monocle? Let's face it, gentlemen, a tracksuit is only suitable on the track... Tracksuits and sweats worn at leisure of perhaps for air travel signal given up completely on appearance and only seek comfort.  It's an ugly American attitude..."

I cannot begin to tell you how long I've been saying this for!  They are called sweats for a reason.  If you aren't going to partake in any activities where you would actually be sweating, don't wear it, and stop the madness.  It's like wearing a swimsuit to a wedding at St. Patrick's Cathedral; you're not going swimming so why wear it? Not even during a baptism! You are not going to run laps at your local Whole Foods, so why wear sweats?  Now you'll say what if you went running prior?  Spare me; I've heard that one already at a dinner party. What happened to the time when women wore full-on ball gowns to dinner parties?  And the men, did they ever look better, perfectly tailored suits with pocket squares and polished oxfords with the best crisp white shirts in town.  I understand times have changed blah blah blah, but can we at least get to the essence of that notion? So what if we are just going to the post office, or just picking up the dry cleaning, look presentable while doing so.   Not like a hung-over frat boy.

Style

Have you ever felt you were born in the wrong decade?  I believe I overdosed at Studio 54 and was reincarnated in the 80's. Whenever I look at images from the 60's and 70's and see how people dressed; I always feel nostalgic. Everyone dressed impeccably then.  These people had style for your nerves. We have become far too lax in our appearance.  Let's put the blame on the invention of sweat pants. I curse the day you were born!

Take a look at the picture above of British actor Malcolm McDowell circa 1973.  He was just having a smoke on the beach. When was the last time you went out for dinner and saw a man dressed this well? A few days ago, I ran into an acquaintance in NYC and he wore cargo shorts and tennis shoes, for dinner. Could you die? Anyway, back to Malcolm McDowell and his wonderful jacket.  The fit is perfection and the fact that it's belted, is even better.  It's all about the details with coats and jackets.  Are you in love with the leather buttons on the epaulets and outside pockets? Take a look at the side-button trousers? They're great! The turtleneck is so fresh and so clean. His feet were cropped in this image and I'm curious on the style of shoe he chose.

Robert Redford looks so damn cool relaxing on the beach. The color combinations are great! The navy corduroy trousers, purple jersey collared shirt and the Cognac and taupe lace-ups. Those are a great pair of shoes! Love how he matched his socks and shoes perfectly! Yet they do not look contrived. The detailing on his brown belt is sick!

I hope everyone is inspired by these images. Has anyone noticed the vintage Christian Dior bag next to Robert Redford? I think it makes that image more interesting.

We Are The Market

Hey Guys,

Remember the post I wrote a few days ago regarding a menswear blog that I would guest edit? It's a cool blog called We Are The Market. My first post for We Are The Marketis on the J. Crew's men's shop opening this Thursday, in New York's Tribeca.  This is great for menswear especially after DNR News reported men's apparel sales rose 2.1 percent while women's sales have dropped to 3.8 percent over the past year.

I will be working on a few posts once a week with BPWM, who own We Are The Market.  Hope you enjoy it!

Sorry

Hey Guys,

Sorry for the lack of posting I've had a hectic week with meetings and trying to squeeze in that Barneys Sale, which was a disappointment for me.  I did not find a damn thing!  Which could possibly be a blessing in disguise.  One of my meetings was to discuss details on guest editing a fashion blog.  I will keep everyone abreast on those details within the next coming days.

Barneys Warehouse Sale

Anyone who is familiar with the Barneys Warehouse sale knows you can get the best deals there.  Discounts from 50-70% off, who can beat that!  Two years ago I bought my favorite Dior high-tops for half off.  They were a tad big but I will do almost anything for a killer shoe and anything Hedi Slimane.  If you are in New York the Barneys Warehouse Sale begins tomorrow Thursday, August 14- September 1st. The LA Sale already started but you still have a chance to catch a few deals. The LA Sale ends on August 17th.  So hurry up if you're in LA.  For those eyeing the Lanvin high-tops that have been on every mans wish list, they've been on mine, maybe you can snag a pair without worrying about not having electricity until the following pay day.

Click on the post title for additional details.

Cuff It Up?

Gossip Girls bad boy Ed Westwick was photographed at LAX wearing cuffed burgundy slim slacks, ashy-black suede Gucci loafers, a white v-neck and a black satin-trimmed dinner jacket.  For starters, the satin-trimmed dinner jacket is a handsome one.  It's a piece a man should own at one point in his life. No? Moving along, my eyes get diverted to his slacks and their severe cuffs.  I'm ambivalent about the cuffs with this particular outfit.  This is a great outfit and beats the usual plethora of sweats and crocs that have blinded us all at airports across America.  I will not begin to discuss airport ensembles on this post it deserves its own post.

Beijing 08 Olympics Summer Style

If you could use one word to describe the US ensembles for the Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony what would it be? I will tell you mine, boring.   I was especially bored with the US when I saw how chic The Netherlands were; in their light-colored grey suits with white piping and marigold neckties.  What did the Americans wear? Ralph Lauren white collared shirts and trousers with a navy blazer and stripped tie with newsboy caps.  The newsboy caps were a great touch, I must say.  Did those navy blazers really need Ralph Lauren's embroidered Polo on the front? Do not get me wrong, I like the look for Sunday Brunch in East Hampton or Golf.  This is the Summer Olympics we are talking about!  The British and the Irish were two peas in a boring pod. The Brits wearing black collared shirts and trousers with a white jacket accessorized with a white and the Irish in ill-fitting beige suits and collared shirts.

Thank the Heavens for the Swiss because they were worse of than the US, UK, and Ireland. Don't you think they looked as if they were going to Great Adventures or Disney World? Vans inspired trainers, below the knee Chinese red shorts and a red decorative beige polo.  Does that not scream Magic Mountain?  Team Australia must have been inspired by McQueen's spring/summer 09 collections; with their lackluster ashy navy trousers and ombre zip-ups.

Tres chic were the French in grey jackets with white collared shirts, black tie and trousers; accessorized with black-banded white fedoras and ribbon belts with the French colors.  The Germans were darling in their white shirts and trousers, grey blazers with matching D-ring belt and white pocket square.
